Paper Description
This is a language acquisition paper designed for absolute beginners in Spanish. The emphasis in the paper is on the development of competence in communication in the four skills - reading, writing, speaking and listening.
The course is targeted at those students who are planning to take a foreign language as part of their studies, and also for those that wish to take Spanish as a degree.
SPNSH131 also offers the students the opportunity to learn throughout the text book and cultural readings about the influence of indigenous loan words on both vocabulary and the pronunciation of colonial Spanish. Students also improve their thinking skills by comparing the words and cultural contexts which they are learning, with those of their first language.
Paper Structure
Students will attend two hours lecture twice a week total of four hours lectures and one language tutorial per week. Students should choose one of the tutorial hours timetabled. Attendance in class is essential in order to make good progress in the language.

There is an online Moodle community for this course. Moodle can be accessed via iWaikato. Lecture presentations, tutorial exercises, assignment details, important dates and the paper outline are all available from this site.
Workload
There are five contact hours per week - four lectures and one tutorial. Studying a foreign language is a cumulative process which requires continuous work. It is recommended that students work on their studies outside the classroom for a minimum of one hour per lecture session.
